Japan Experience

Roots of Cogent Language

Cogent Language has been based in Tokyo since 2007. Our connections to Japan go much further back, however, and they are not just geographical. We began collaborative work with Japanese stakeholders a long time ago. This experience helps us provide more value to the individuals and organizations from Japan that we work with today.

Silicon Valley Youth

Our Managing Director, Dan Clapper, began working with Japanese people in the late 1970's. The place was Silicon Valley, where he designed award-winning educational programs for high-potential international youth, many of whom were from Japan.

Quality Innovations

From there, Clapper followed Japanese manufacturing through the 1980's in order to introduce business innovations from Japan, such as Ishikawa's quality tools, in university classes he taught on cybernetic systems.

Education in Japan

Moving to Japan in 1991, Clapper began teaching at Temple University Japan (TUJ). Over the next few years, he earned an advanced degree in education from TUJ while working both there and at a number of Japanese schools.

Global Business

By 1994, Clapper had become a manager at TUJ, helping the university begin an engagement with the private sector in Japan that continues to this day. In 1996, after returning to the US, he began working as a training consultant with a Fortune 5 global corporation. In this role, he participated in key Human Resource projects for some 14 different countries. However, with much of the firm's focus on operations in Japan, he had the chance to stay involved with projects there for more than a decade.

“Dan greatly propelled a key project when he provided consulting to my team on building a collaborative High Performance Organization in Clinical Research."

Cogent Language in Japan

Since establishing Cogent Language in Tokyo in 2007, we have provided consulting solutions for a range of premiere international firms. We have helped Japanese companies globalize successfully, and we have helped multinationals do better in Japan. In the course of these and other consulting engagements in Asia Pacific, we have surfaced a consistent need for better learning opportunities in modern project management. To address this need, we have developed a framework for learning that is tailored to the region. We call it Collaborative Project Management.

Collaborative Project Management

To accelerate the development of 21st Century project know-how, this framework identifies and integrates competencies in systems thinking and project management with practical business communication and pertinent language skills. The framework has already been welcomed in Japan by institutions and by individual participants in our programs. As customized to the needs of Temple University Japan, for example, our framework was featured in the October 2011 issue of AERA English magazine.

For You and Your Organization

Whether you are managing a business, an NPO, a government organization or a post-secondary school in Japan, this framework is customizable to the needs of your organization as well. If you are interested, please don't hesitate to contact us for a free consultation. Let's talk!
